Cold weather and frost damage mango orchards in Multan

The mango orchards in Multan have been impacted by cold weather and frost, causing damage to the fruit. With temperatures falling to six degrees Celsius, the chill has led to the rotting of mango leaves, raising concerns among local gardeners for their year-long efforts. The mango gardens, covering an area of 32,375 hectares in Multan, faced considerable effects from the cold. Gardeners have initiated the use of polyethylene bags to cover their plants, aiming to shield them from frost. Horticulture experts recommend additional measures to protect the crops against the cold.

Muhammad Atif, a scientific officer at the Mango Research Institute, endorses the practice of covering plants with plastic sheets as an efficient and dependable approach. He further suggests employing Sheesam tree branches or applying water spray on the plants during frost-expected nights to avert damage. Agricultural professionals advocate for the application of blue sulfur and lime to further defend the plants from frost, highlighting the importance of timely protective measures to prevent additional losses in the orchards.
