Optimal spring conditions in New Zealand have fostered a conducive environment for kiwifruit cultivation, potentially leading to an exceptional season, according to Tim Tietjen, a representative for NZ Kiwifruit Growers. The favorable weather has facilitated efficient pollination and contributed to fruit size enhancement. Tietjen noted, "The current crop is generally looking really good, thanks to that fantastic spring."
The kiwifruit season is progressing ahead of schedule by approximately seven to ten days, with expectations of an early harvest commencing with the ruby red kiwifruit in early March. Recent large-scale orchard developments are reaching full production, promising an uptick in regional crop volume. However, growers are vigilant about soil moisture levels, employing irrigation systems at full capacity to mitigate the effects of evapotranspiration. The primary concern remains the increasing dryness in the Tairāwhiti area, with anticipated rainfall being highly anticipated as a "welcome Christmas present."
