Wholesale fruit and vegetable prices - Week 50

Strawberry prices jump a whopping 29% from week 49

The data compares the 'average' price for the current week and the 'previous week's average price for several fruits, revealing minor and significant fluctuations across certain varieties. Among apples, for example, Bramley's seedling apples saw a slight decline, with the current week's average at £1.29 compared to the previous week's £1.32, a drop of £0.03, equivalent to a 2% decrease. A similar trend can be observed for Cox's orange group apples, whose price fell to £1.19 this week from £1.20 last week, indicating a minor decrease of £0.01 or 1%. These changes suggest subtle shifts in supply or demand conditions for these apple varieties.

Other varieties of apples exhibited slight declines or stability. Gala apples, for instance, dropped to £1.17 this week from £1.20 last week, reflecting a £0.03 decrease or 3%. However, the 'other late season' apples showed a small positive movement, rising by £0.01 to £1.20 from £1.19 last week, signaling a 1% increase. These changes across apple varieties indicate a mixed pricing trend, influenced by supply and demand conditions for the week.

Among other fruits, strawberries stood out with a significant price surge. The current week's average price for strawberries soared to £4.80, compared to £3.71 in the previous week, reflecting a sharp increase of £1.09 or 29%. This notable rise underscores heightened demand or reduced availability of strawberries during the week, contributing to their substantial price growth.

Meanwhile, Conference pears and Doyenne du Comice pears maintained stability. Conference pears edged up by £0.01 to £1.14 from £1.13, marking a 1% increase, while Doyenne du Comice pears remained flat at £0.85 for both weeks. These observations suggest relative price stability for pears despite fluctuations in other fruits. Overall, while some fruits like strawberries saw sharp price increases, others, such as apples, experienced slight declines or modest gains, reflecting diverse market dynamics across the fruit sector.
