Citrus prices are currently at a reasonable level. "Prices for mandarins from Spain are around 15 euros. Next month, we will also receive the first Tang Gold mandarins again," says Ronnie Moorman of Willem Dijk AGF in Enschede. "The price of Navelinas ranges between 0.80 and 1.20 euros per kilo."
"What stands out this year is that, due to bad weather, more Moroccan citrus is coming this way compared to other years. Our suppliers have also been affected by the adverse weather, but overall, plenty of Spanish citrus is still arriving. Sales are going quite well, and we have no complaints," says the commercial manager. As Christmas approaches, he does not anticipate much unusual activity. "Everyone always expects a lot from Christmas, but in the domestic market, those additional demands remain limited, especially because the holidays are not particularly favorable this year. However, demand from exports is picking up slightly."
He also notes no significant increase in demand for specialties like the so-called Choco oranges. "When they were first introduced, everyone wanted them, but the hype has died down a bit. They are still a nice product to offer, but the craze is over. More and more producers are exporting to the Netherlands and Germany, so being the 'only one' is no longer possible," Ronnie concludes.
Willem Dijk has been working with exclusive brands such as Filosofo and Elefant alongside generic brands for years. As a result, the red promotional elephant of the latter brand is once again available for customers at the Enschede-based fresh produce store. "We are also seeing strong demand for Cara Cara oranges from Elefant," he adds.
