Between January 1 and September 30, 2024, the European aubergine market was dominated by the Spanish product. Sales volumes broke all records, but revenue lagged behind, according to a report prepared by Hortoinfo based on primary figures from the Euroestacom (ICEX-Eurostat) statistics service.
In the first nine months of the year, EU member states purchased 163.82 million kilos of aubergines from other countries, 16.23% more than in the same period of 2015, for 202.73 million euros and an average price of 1.24 euros per kilo.
Spain supplied 101.9 million kilos, i.e. 62.2% of the total imported by EU countries. This is the highest volume that Spain has ever sent to the Community markets in the period analyzed and 36.33 percent higher than in the same months of 2015.
The Netherlands was the EU's second-biggest aubergine supplier in the first nine months of 2024 with 31.93 million kilos. That is 19.49% of the total and 11.09% less than in the same months of 2015.
Germany followed with 6.47 million kilos, a 3.95% share, and 6.8% more than in the same period of 2015.
Turkey ranked fourth with 6.27 million kilos, a 3.83% share, and 90.33% more than in the same period of 2015.
Italy ranked fifth with 3.55 million kilos, a 2.17% share, and 15.06% less than in the same period of 2015.
Between January and September 2024, the value of Spanish aubergine exports to the EU reached 116.5 million euros and the average price stood at 1.14 euros per kilo.
