Tauranga GP Dr Andrew Corin has seamlessly integrated his medical profession with his passion for agriculture by establishing an avocado orchard. This endeavor not only represents a pursuit of work-life balance but also a deep connection with the land. Corin, alongside his wife Kathy, transitioned from urban living in Auckland to a more rural lifestyle in Tauranga, drawn by work opportunities and the desire for a community closer to nature. Their journey into avocado cultivation began in 2002 on a 1.4ha section in Bethlehem, previously an old kiwifruit orchard. The choice to plant 72 avocado trees was driven by the therapeutic value of physical work and the benefits of engaging with the land.
The orchard faced challenges, notably in 2017 when runoff from a nearby development flooded the orchard, resulting in significant losses. This setback led to the adoption of resilient Hass on Bounty rootstock avocados and an improved planting system. Despite these efforts, Cyclone Gabrielle in 2023 further impacted the orchard, prompting Corin to explore diversification with Reed avocados. Beyond agriculture, Corin applies a holistic Positive Medicine model in his practice, emphasizing mental, emotional, family, social, spiritual, and physical well-being. His creative pursuits have also flourished, with the publication of his books "This Old Stick" and "Today in Paradise," alongside maintaining a blog and podcast series. Corin's story underscores the multifaceted approach to achieving work-life balance and resilience in facing agricultural challenges.
