Vietnam aims for passion fruit and pomelo exports to US and Australia amid rising trade

According to the Import-Export Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, passion fruit and pomelo are set to be the next Vietnamese agricultural products exported to the United States and Australia. Negotiations on phytosanitary measures for fresh passion fruit between Vietnam and the US are underway, aiming for entry into the US market next year. Concurrently, discussions are ongoing for the export of Vietnamese pomelo to Australia.

Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports have increased, with nearly US$6.62 billion earned in the past 11 months, a 27.4% increase from the previous year. The International Trade Center highlights Vietnam as the third largest supplier of fruit, vegetables, and processed products to Australia in the first 10 months of the year, achieving a turnover of US$109.68 million, a 35.4% increase year on year.

Australia currently permits the import of five Vietnamese fresh fruit varieties: dragon fruit, mango, longan, passion fruit, and lychee. However, to penetrate the Australian market successfully, Vietnamese firms must adhere to strict technical, labeling, and food hygiene and safety standards, which are considered more demanding than those in the US and the EU. Vietnamese authorities are encouraged to improve quality control, registration, and evaluation systems for agricultural products, negotiate market access more effectively, and enhance promotional and branding efforts.
