Martin Bolhuis, Gardeners' Interest:

"Promising start for the cabbage market"

In the cabbage market, the outlook for 2025 is promising. "Prices for this time of year are good, and stocks in storage are not high. There has been consistent trade directly from the fields all year, and at the moment, there is virtually no product waiting in the pre-processing area. Almost all cabbage is stored in cold storage, but that is at least 10% less than what we are used to," says Martin Bolhuis of Tuindersbelang from Warmenhuizen, an organization managing sales for around 60 cabbage growers.

"The quality is also good at the moment, contributing to a healthy market. Producers prefer to deliver cabbage on order and at a premium price, but promotional actions are not necessary right now. That creates a solid foundation," Martin notes. Prices are currently around 45-50 cents per kilogram for white cabbage, ex-field and including packaging, while red cabbage has risen to between 65 and 75 cents per kilogram.

"There is simply less cabbage available, and so far, supply aligns well with demand," he adds. "Looking back at the end of last year and the beginning of this year, we really have no complaints. We typically export a significant amount of cabbage to the UK and Italy, but Ukraine is also back in the market, and beyond that, we are active in all the countries in between. It's a wide-ranging market, and the outlook for the rest of the season is positive."
