For the first time in South America, the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Irrigation, through SENASA, initiated phytosanitary certifications to export fresh fruits in reefer ships (under cold treatment) through the port of Paracas, Ica.
"As a government, we are committed to implementing innovative systems that promote the growth of agro-exports, consolidating our position as leaders in loading methodologies. SENASA's technical support is key to this progress," stated Ángel Manero, head of MIDAGRI.
This first ship, loaded with 4,000 pallets of table grapes (equivalent to almost 200 containers), will depart from the port of Paracas bound for ports along the US coast. This shipment contains grapes produced in the regions of Ica, Arequipa, and Piura. The ship's four holds will be completely filled with this quality fruit, which will undergo cold treatment in transit. Other shipments with similar quantities are planned for January 3 and 8.
A historical milestone
The cold treatment in ship holds is a novelty in the Peruvian industry. It has been possible thanks to the high specialization of SENASA technical staff, which have been trained by experts from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA-APHIS) working together with fresh fruit exporters.
26 SENASA inspectors will be responsible for carrying out this cold treatment process for the first time, after several years of planning and preparation. This operation represents an advance in the efficiency of transport and logistics, and a response to the great demand for Peruvian products in the international market.
This is also an effective solution for the industry in the face of a shortage of containers, a challenge that has affected the transport of agricultural products globally. Peru sends its grapes to 65 countries, including the United States, the European Union, China, Korea, Thailand, and Malaysia, among other places.
Table grapes are one of Peru's most important fruit exports, and this technological advance in their transport reinforces Peru's commitment to quality and international competitiveness. With it, the country demonstrates its ability to innovate and adapt to global challenges, consolidating its position as a leader in fresh fruit exports.
