Brazil's fruit exports: growth in mangoes, melons, and citrus in 2024

Within Brazil, the Northeast region is the epicenter for mango cultivation, while Rio Grande do Norte is recognized for its melon production, and São Paulo is a leading producer of lemons, with an annual yield of approximately 1.3 million tons. Grapes are predominantly harvested in São Paulo, the South, and certain Northeastern states.

Brazilian mangoes have made a significant impact on the international stage, being the country's most exported fruit. In 2023, Brazil exported 266,000 tons of mangoes and is on track to exceed this figure in 2024. From January to September 2024, mango export revenues surged by 46.19%, from $147 million in 2023 to $215 million.

The global market also appreciates Brazilian melons for their taste and aroma, with exports exceeding 228,000 tons in 2023. Data from the Secretariat of Foreign Trade (Secex) indicates that by September 2024, melon exports had reached 133,000 tons.

Brazilian lemons and limes are celebrated worldwide for their distinct flavor and versatility in culinary applications. A study by William Paterson University highlighted lemons as the healthiest fruit globally. In 2023, Brazil's lemon and lime exports surpassed 166,000 tons. Export volumes and revenues increased by 9.16% and 14.52% respectively, between January and September 2024, totaling $155.7 million.

Watermelon, known for its sweet and refreshing taste, is another fruit from Brazil that enjoys international demand. In 2023, over 114,000 tons were exported, with Goiás being the largest producing state.

Despite being fifth in terms of export volume, Brazilian grapes are recognized for their quality and flavor. Over 73,000 tons were exported in 2023. However, climate changes in 2024, particularly in the São Francisco Valley, led to a 68.75% decrease in grape exports during the first half of the year.
