"Despite the limited production compared to previous years, consumption is not exceptional for brassicas, however this trend was already evident at the start of the season," reports Pasquale Bruno, sales manager of Natura Ortaggi, a company from Basilicata for which brassicas represent the core business, and which guarantees supplies to national and European buyers from September to July.
"Compared to the Italian market where quotations remain under pressure, prices abroad are higher, especially in Germany, Poland, Serbia, and Lithuania. Abroad they are aware of the trend in the fields and, therefore, the slight price increases we are forced to apply seem justified."
The recent temperature fluctuations are generating some benefits on the production front, especially at a time of low demand. "We are experiencing a winter season with lows close to zero, even for prolonged periods. When it comes to cauliflowers, we cannot make a comparison with the volumes sold in the same period in 2024, as temperatures one year ago were above average and, therefore, the harvest was more abundant. But if we look at the quantities shipped 15-20 days earlier, we can see a drop of over 25%. For broccoli, on the other hand, we are starting to see a real shortage in supply and an increase in waste due to the frequent rain, so we expect a considerable increase in selling prices, even by 30%, as the drop in temperature stimulates consumption."
