A month ago, Handelfresh launched the Moroccan season for Nadorcott mandarins. "We have access to a good crop in Morocco. The weather has been favorable, and there has been enough water, ensuring sufficient supply, including the most requested sizes," says Ahmed Laasri.
The exporter of Moroccan fruit and vegetables is based in the Netherlands but increasingly exports directly from Morocco to the UK. "We now deliver several shipments per week to the UK market. The advantage is that they accept the required price. There is demand from the Netherlands, but Dutch customers tend to complain more and push for lower prices because they need higher margins for re-export," the exporter explains.
Competition for Moroccan Nadorcott mandarins currently comes mainly from Egypt, where prices are slightly lower. "Last week, the price of Moroccan Nadorcott mandarins was around €11 per box. The week before, it was still between €9 and €9.50, so there is an upward trend," Ahmed notes. "In addition to the UK, we are also seeing increased demand from Eastern European countries," he adds.
"Demand for tomatoes is also going well, again primarily from the UK. We have recently exported a significant quantity of Moroccan tomatoes. Currently, the price of Moroccan tomatoes is around €1.46 delivered to the UK, but I expect prices to rise further in the coming weeks."
