Popular during the festive season, the lychee production from Reunion Island is in bad shape. According to the French newspaper Ouest-France, the production on the island has fallen by three-quarters compared with "the good years."
A producer interviewed from Saint-Benoît points the finger at global warming. As the season draws to a close, the results are "mediocre", with production between 2,500 and 2,700 tons, compared with over 6,000 tons in 2020, according to Eric Lucas, head of plant diversification at the Reunion Chamber of Agriculture. As a reminder, 2023 was already a low year, with a production of 2,200 tons for this fruit, which occupies most of the agricultural land on the island (over 250 hectares), ahead of mangoes and longans.
