A packaging solution for rambutan that will increase shelf-life, while using plant-based materials, could be the solution to the struggles that rambutan exporters have had to deal with. Emily Rodriguez, head of marketing of fresh produce packaging manufacturer PeelON, states that the RamPeel is one of their flagship packaging solutions, specifically designed for rambutan: "It's a compostable packaging that extends the shelf life of rambutan by up to three times, addressing key challenges like spoilage, blackening, and size degradation. Rambutan is sensitive to environmental factors, which can lead to these challenges, originating from dehydration. RamPeel creates a controlled microclimate around the fruit, by regulating oxygen and moisture levels. This slows down respiration and reduces fungal growth, ensuring that the fruit retains its appearance, texture, and size for much longer."
According to Rodriguez, the packaging that PeelON developed specifically deals with challenges encountered when using traditional packaging. "Unlike traditional plastic wraps that trap excess moisture and accelerate fungal growth, RamPeel's breathable, plant-based material actively regulates oxygen and moisture, preventing premature spoilage. It eliminates the need for moisture absorbers or additional treatments while being eco-friendly."
The RamPeel packaging also extends the shelf life of the packed produce, Rodriguez states: "RamPeel is fully compostable, breaking down into natural components within 180 days under home composting conditions. This reduces reliance on plastic and minimizes waste in the environment. Moreover, by extending the shelf life of rambutan, RamPeel also tackles food waste, which is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions."
Rodriguez emphasizes that PeelON has worked together with rambutan exporters to test and see if the product meets their needs. "We've conducted extensive trials with rambutan exporters and distributors in Central American regions like Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras. The results have been remarkable; up to 95% reduction in spoilage, significant retention of fruit quality, and longer storage and transit times without blackening or shrinkage. Exporters have reported increased customer satisfaction and fewer losses."
PeelON is still looking to expand further in the Latin American and Asian markets: ""We are actively engaging with regional distributors and retailers in Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras to scale RamPeel's adoption. We are also pursuing partnerships in Southeast Asia, where tropical fruit exports are growing and demand for sustainable packaging solutions is accelerating. As exporters and retailers increasingly seek ways to extend shelf life and reduce waste, plant-based, compostable packaging options are emerging as a viable alternative to traditional plastic. Solutions like RamPeel could play a key role in shaping the future of fresh produce logistics and sustainability," Rodriguez concludes.
