George Smith, as the next Master of London's Worshipful Company of Fruiterers, started his journey in the fruit business on December 20, 1964, at Covent Garden's Floral Hall Yard. As an eight-year-old, he waited for the morning's fruit deliveries, experiencing the unique market atmosphere. This early exposure to the produce trade laid the foundation for a successful career.
In the 1980s, George worked with the British Potato Marketing Board before founding Midsummer Marketing in 1988. He has represented fruit growers, including Washington Apples, USA NW Cherries, Florida Citrus, and American Pistachios, developing export markets across Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and India. His first USA client was Washington Apples, and during a trip to Washington, he met Josefina, with whom he will celebrate a 25th wedding anniversary in December 2024.
George's 30-year tenure with The Fruiterers has been marked by strong relationships and contributions to the Livery's reputation as a friendly organization. As Master, George plans to uphold this reputation while focusing on charitable efforts. He emphasizes the importance of supporting the City of London and the Lord Mayor, with a focus on City Harvest charity.
The Fruiterers will commemorate 80 years since the end of World War II with visits to Historical Dockyard Chatham, Imperial War Museum Lambeth, and RAF Hendon. Key City events include The City Food & Drink Lecture, the Lord Mayor's Big Curry Lunch, and elections of the Sheriffs and Lord Mayor.
The 2025 schedule includes a St Paul's Day Service, Company Banquet, Tree Planting at Royal Park Bushy Hampton Court, International Marmalade Festival, Ski Trip, Audit Court Dinner, Inter Livery Clay Pigeon Shooting, Fruiterers' Golf Day, Royal Bath and West Show, RN Historic Dockyards Chatham, Summer Court Dinner at RAF Hendon, Imperial War Museum visit, Master's Trip to Vienna, Garden of the Year, Presentation of Fruit, Master, and Wardens Dinner, and Fruiterers' Carol Service. Additional events feature concerts, inter-livery activities, and new member events.
