Oversupply for leafy vegetables

"Positive cucumber and mandarin season in Greece"

It's been a quiet winter season for the produce from Greece, but there are positives for two specific seasons, says Nick Nafpliotis, company director of fresh produce exporter Greek & Fresh: "We're currently in the midst of our cucumber and mandarin season, both of which have been positive, better than they were last year. We've seen fewer fluctuations in prices and the quality of the produce was good, so the stage was set for both the mandarin and cucumber season."

The weather has played a major part in keeping the produce undamaged and of good quality, Nafpliotis explains. "Part of this positive season can be attributed to the lack of major weather disruptions, which means less produce was damaged and the produce was up to the client's expectations. This meant that the Baltic markets were really strong for us this season."

Looking at the leafy vegetables specifically, there has been an oversupply, as most of the producing countries have not had any major disruptions to deal with: "We're also in the leafy veg exports, and for these products, there have not been any challenges either, which is the same for other European producers. This means there's been a bit of an oversupply in the European markets, since mid-December. This is due to good weather conditions. However, this means there is no emergency demand, due to other producing countries losing any of their produce. All in all, this means it's been a quiet winter season for the leafy veg products," Nafpliotis concludes.
