First positive feedback already in Berlin

2025 Deliveries already being planned for Gavina black watermelons

O.P. Agricola Campidanese, one of the most structured fruit and vegetable companies in Sardinia, presented the new seedless Gavina full-black watermelon at the Berlin trade fair, following a production and commercial trial that took place during the past season.

Marco Lotta, sales manager of the producer organization, commented: "This watermelon is very recognizable on the shelves and is well suited to varietal renewal and, therefore, to the changing buying habits of consumers, who tend to prefer smaller fruits that are easier to carry. Some Dutch, German, and Polish retail chains have already planned trial supplies for the 2025 season. Even a well-known Italian brand has confirmed to us that it wants to embark on an important commercial path following last year's sales. At the fair, we showcased the characteristics of these watermelons. Last year we dedicated a small part of our area to this crop, i.e. about 5 hectares, but for the new season we have decided to invest around 20 hectares."

The new Gavina Black mini watermelons are seedless, with sizes ranging from 1.2 to 2 kg, compact and crunchy flesh, a rind of about 0.5 cm, and a shelf-life exceeding 20 days. "In the previous season, when volumes were limited and few people were familiar with this new product, starting sale prices ranged from €1.50-2/piece, boasting a commercial calendar from June to late September," Marco Lotta concludes.
