Once again this year, the very early asparagus produced by ASPA2 is opening the French asparagus season. "We started harvesting and selling on January 13th." This campaign date is always uncorrelated with the vagaries of the weather thanks to an underground hot water system that gives great control over the temperature of the mounds. "We have a big advantage in that we can open the hot water valves on any given plot. As a result, we can control the arrival date of the asparagus by a day or two."
Controlling the temperature of the mounds means that the quality of the asparagus is consistent from one year to the next. "This year, once again, we have a very white product, with very little fiber and very little bitterness. This consistency in quality is a big advantage with our clients, who are looking for a top-of-the-range product, both in France and abroad."
Another advantage, this time linked to the terroir, is that the land was prepared in good conditions despite the abundance of rain. "Technically, all our plots are ready. Situated on the former bed of the Loire River, our soil has the advantage of draining very well, which means that we were able to prepare the plots without difficulty despite the excess rainfall. Unfortunately, that is not the case for all asparagus growers. Some have had a lot of trouble cultivating on waterlogged plots."
