Iran's potato prices surge 103%, sparking economic strain and government intervention

A record surge in potato prices is placing additional financial strain on Iranians amid reports that one in three households struggle to afford necessities. The crisis has gained particular prominence as the heads of the three branches of power have stepped in and issued a directive to address the price surge. However, the relatively rare high-level intervention has only fueled criticism of the authorities.

The coverage: The price of potatoes in Iran has jumped in recent days, with prices rising from around 200,000 IRR to 750,000 IRR (0.25-0.82 USD at the open market) in the past two months.
