Dutch apple exports grow in Vietnam as Tessa Apple gains popularity

The Netherlands stands as the second-largest global exporter of agricultural products by value, trailing only the United States. This includes leading exports of tomatoes, potatoes, and onions, and a strong position in the vegetable sector overall. Dutch expertise enables the production and export of fruit using advanced, sustainable techniques in both soil and greenhouses.

Vietnam, with its population of 101 million, represents a growing market in Asia, investing heavily in fruit imports. As of mid-May 2024, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable imports were valued at US$725.6 million, with apples leading at US$237.1 million in 2023. The Dutch government has facilitated market access for its apples and pears in Vietnam, with the first shipment of Dutch Conference pears arriving on March 2, 2016, following cooperation between the Dutch and Vietnamese governments.

FruitMasters, a Dutch cooperative, has adapted to Vietnamese consumer preferences, introducing the Tessa Apple, known for its sweet flavor. Initially, Vietnamese consumers encountered a crunchier, more acidic apple. However, over the years, FruitMasters tailored its offerings to suit local tastes. By 2024, shipments of Tessa Apples increased to over 30 containers, reflecting their growing popularity.

On January 17, 2025, Consul General Mr. Daniël Stork attended the Dutch Tessa Apple Product Launch Event at Go! hypermarkets in Ho Chi Minh City, coinciding with the Tết holiday. This event highlighted the Dutch fruit offerings to Vietnamese consumers, emphasizing the cultural exchange and enjoyment of Dutch fruits during the holiday season.
