Steady potato retail demand and balanced supply as farm-gate prices stabilize

Retail demand and consumption remain steady. Demand and supply should be in balance for the remainder of the season especially as stocks were so low at the end of last year's season. There was some pressure on farm-gate prices over the past two weeks, however, looking at the supply situation prices should stabilise.

On the European front, the steady rise in prices in the physical markets which has taken place since the start of the year has come to a halt. Contracts are being cleared as soon as they become ready but free buy demand is relatively light. Export volumes are reduced as buyers absorb the recent price increases but there is still light trade to the Caribbean and Africa from Holland.
