The marketing of German table potatoes is now in the second half of the season. "Marketing is going as usual: February is a bit weaker than usual, but I would rate January sales as slightly above average. All cooking types and main varieties are still available from German cultivation, thanks to the good yields overall. In addition to regional produce, we are also already offering Cypriot early potatoes, although demand for these is rather restrained," summarizes Marco Sion, a potato wholesaler at the local wholesale market in Cologne.
"German produce from the previous year will probably be available until well into May," Sion continues. "Certain varieties and suppliers will disappear from the market from April onwards. At the same time, there is usually another boost in marketing, whereby the larger suppliers who still have enough produce in stock can get better prices for their potatoes." The price level has been quite normal so far. "2024 was a relatively abundant potato year with predominantly good storage qualities, which in turn contributed to reasonable price levels. Shortly after the turn of the year, there was the usual cold storage surcharge, and I, personally, expect a further storage surcharge until the end of March."

The onion season is also well into its second half. Sion: "We continue to receive good quantities of yellow and red onions from our partner in the Palatinate, which is also thanks to the investments in storage capacity over the last 10-20 years. The price level for local onions is currently around 32 EUR/100 kg (USD 33.53), which I would describe as quite normal for the time of year. As in the previous year, we will be offering additional overseas goods from New Zealand, Tasmania, and South Africa from mid-March. Depending on the weather, I currently expect that we will be able to supply the markets with yellow onions of German origin until mid-to-late March. Red onions are usually available even longer."
