Drewry's Intra-Asia Container Index (IACI) tracks actual spot container freight rates across key intra-Asia trade routes. The index, updated on a fortnightly basis, provides a weighted average of regional shipping costs, offering a comprehensive view of current market trends in the container freight sector. The IACI comprises 18 route-specific indices that reflect rates on individual shipping routes, along with a composite index that captures overall movement across the region. All rates are reported in U.S. dollars per 40-foot container.
The index covers trade routes connecting major ports across Asia and beyond. These include shipping lanes from Busan, Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta, Jawaharlal Nehru Port, Kaohsiung, and Laem Chabang to Shanghai, as well as outbound routes from Shanghai to Busan, Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta, Jawaharlal Nehru Port, Jebel Ali, Kaohsiung, Laem Chabang, Manila, Singapore, Tanjung Pelepas, and Yokohama. Additionally, routes between Yokohama and Shanghai are also included in the index. Through this detailed coverage, the IACI provides a valuable benchmark for stakeholders monitoring trends and pricing in the intra-Asia container shipping market.
Drewry's Intra-Asia Container Index (IACI) declined 2% to $604 per 40-ft container in the first half of March. The IACI, a weighted average of spot rates across 18 major trade routes within Asia, remains 39% higher than in March 2024. Drewry anticipates freight rates to stabilize in the coming weeks as delivery times have improved and logistics operations return to normal after the holiday break.
