Zespri has announced the availability of its RubyRed kiwifruit across retail outlets in New Zealand. The variety, distinguished by its red flesh and smaller size, will be available in the fresh produce sections of major supermarkets and fruit retailers nationwide until June.
According to Zespri General Manager of Marketing KokHwee Ng, the RubyRed kiwifruit is notable for its red pigmentation, which comes from naturally occurring anthocyanins. The fruit is also a source of Vitamin C and other antioxidants. "Zespri RubyRed has a striking red flesh and a unique berry sweet taste," Ng said.

Ng noted that the fruit's skin is more delicate than other kiwifruit varieties, requiring careful handling. It also has a shorter shelf life and should be refrigerated until ready for consumption. The fruit can be left at room temperature to ripen.
This year's RubyRed kiwifruit volume is expected to double compared with 2024, reaching approximately three million trays or 10,800 tons. In addition to being sold domestically, the fruit will be exported to various markets in the Asia-Pacific region, including the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, the Pacific Islands, and the United States. The company indicated that it anticipates further expansion of the product's reach in future seasons.
