Russia boosts orchards with resilient apple varieties

Russia's horticulture sector is experiencing growth, influenced by governmental backing and the swift development of modern intensive orchards, which spanned 8,500 hectares in 2024, as per the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation.

This expansion is supported by progress in domestic fruit crop breeding, with new varieties tailored to the country's varied climates.

From 2023 to 2025, six new pome fruit varieties have been officially listed in Russia's State Register of Breeding Achievements. Among these are the apple varieties Blagodatnoe Koltso, Krymskoe Zolotistoe, and Pamyati Pokrovskoy, noted for their resistance to pests, diseases, drought, and extreme frosts down to -26°C.

Developing high-quality apple varieties necessitates thorough research, including consumer preference analysis. Experts emphasize the importance of collaboration among researchers, horticulturalists, and retail networks in developing varieties that merge disease resistance, climate adaptability, and taste.
