High fruit prices in Cuba turn mangoes into a luxury

Content creator Jesús de Cuba recently highlighted the price of mangoes in Cuba through a TikTok video. Visiting the 19 y B Agromarket in El Vedado, Havana, Jesús documented the high prices of agricultural products, despite challenges from vendors wary of being filmed.

In March, as the fruit season begins, mangoes are priced at 500 Cuban pesos (US$4.17) per pound. Soursops share this price, while lemons cost 600 pesos (US$5.00) per pound. Cachucha peppers are 1,000 pesos (US$8.33), bell peppers 150 pesos (US$1.25), and tomatoes 120 pesos (US$1.00) per pound. These prices reflect the inflation and ongoing economic crisis affecting Cuba.

In a tropical country, fruit should be both plentiful and affordable. However, the high cost of mangoes and other produce items has made them a luxury for many Cubans. The population faces shortages impacting daily nutrition and quality of life.
