Early table grapes from Egypt scheduled for early May

The Egyptian table grape season is scheduled to start at the beginning of May, with the early varieties in a stable environment with constant acreage and mild weather conditions, according to Mohammed Ezzat, CEO of Green Nile.

"Table grape acreage in Egypt has remained relatively stable, with moderate increases in certain regions due to growing export demand. Compared with last season, there is a slight expansion, particularly in modern farms focusing on export grades. However, rising production costs and water management challenges have slowed aggressive expansion," Ezzat says.

This season, production conditions were generally favorable, according to the grower. He adds: "There were a few climatic fluctuations. Temperature variations in early spring had a minor impact on flowering and fruit sets in some regions. Phytosanitary conditions are being closely monitored, and growers are adopting stricter pest and disease management protocols, particularly with regard to powdery mildew and mealybugs. Compliance with export regulations, particularly for the European market, remains a priority."

The early start to the season, a new feature in recent years, has become the norm. Ezzat reports: "The grape season in Egypt typically starts at the beginning of May, and this year should follow the usual schedule. Initially, there were fears of slight delays due to weather changes, but most indications suggest that the harvest will be on schedule. Growers are making sure they are ready to meet the demands of export markets, particularly in Europe and Asia."

Behind the seasonality of Egyptian table grapes, starting as early as May, is the competitive advantage acquired in recent seasons. Ezzat explains: "Egyptian growers continue to give priority to early-season varieties to maintain their export window. Popular choices include Flame Seedless, Superior Seedless (Sugraone), and Early Sweet, which enjoy strong demand in European and Middle Eastern markets. There is also growing interest in premium varieties, such as Autumn Crisp and Arra varieties, due to rising export prices. Some growers are also turning to newer seedless varieties to match evolving market preferences."
