At the Perishable Logistics Africa 2025 conference in Nairobi, Kakuzi PLC's Managing Director, Chris Flowers, highlighted the need for Kenya's avocado sector to diversify exports beyond Europe, targeting North America. Flowers emphasized that both public and private stakeholders should explore high-value markets in the region.
Kakuzi PLC is currently mapping its path to the North American market, focusing on production, processing, and logistical preparedness pending market access rights. Flowers noted, "While China and India hold a latent potential, their current demand is still relatively low compared to the European market. As the largest consumer of avocados globally, the North American region must be considered a future target for Kenya's exports."
The USA's avocado consumption reached 1.3 million metric tons in 2024, with over 80% sourced from Mexico, compared to 0.9 million metric tons in Europe. This data underscores the potential for Kenyan producers.
Flowers stated, "As Kenyan avocado production continues to grow, commercial companies must collaborate with Kenyan Government agencies to gain access to this lucrative market. A common strategy, focusing on compliance with regulations, market research, and strategic partnerships, will pave the way for successful market entry."
