"Weighing and packaging lettuce means less product loss"

Retailers prioritize visual appeal and flavor in their fresh produce aisles. Significant quality can, however, be lost during these products' packaging process. Though often unnoticed, that negatively affects both the product and supplier's reputation. Delicate foods like lettuce and spinach are particularly susceptible to this. Careful handling is thus required to maintain freshness and prevent damage.

To address these challenges, the Japanese company Yamato Scale is using its expertise to develop weighing and packaging solutions. "The OMEGA series, especially the ADW-O-1214S, combines innovative hardware with advanced software to package leafy vegetables," says Chun Ha, Yamato Scales' United Kingdom Managing Director and, since 2022, also responsible for all the company's European subsidiaries.

"The OMEGA ADW-O-1214S has large weighing bins, specifically designed to process leafy greens without affecting its quality. The leaves don't stick to the contoured contact surface, so the product flow is smooth with very little damage. The drop height is minimal, and the process is fully automated, eliminating the need for manual intervention."

"Too© Yamato -heavy packaging is reduced too, and production increases of 10% have been demonstrated. There's also less defective packaging and waste, contributing to sustainability objectives," Chu Han explains. And because the OMEGA series has an IP67 rating, the machines can be used in wet conditions. Plus, you can clean them using water and detergents, which means they meet food industry hygiene standards.

"This technology offers advantages to all supply chain parties. Food processors lose less product and improve profitability, while consumers receive fresh, undamaged produce. Retailers save costs thanks to extended shelf lives, and the reduced waste helps the environment," concludes Chun Ha.
