In southern Laos' Attapeu province, a large-scale durian cultivation initiative is set to commence, utilizing hundreds of hectares to align with governmental objectives for commercial fruit farming. This step aligns with Laos' strategy to position itself as a durian supplier to China, as reported by Laos national TV on April 10.
The project allocates over 273 hectares for durian cultivation, reflecting a national policy that encourages private investment in agriculture while also focusing on forest conservation. This move addresses the increasing demand from China.
The Lao government is urging farmers and producers to enhance supply to the domestic market and boost export production to generate foreign currency. The target is a 4.3% growth in agriculture by 2025, intending to elevate the sector's contribution to the national GDP to 22.4%.
