New rail link speeds reefer cargo from Gioia Tauro to Verona

A new weekly rail service has been launched to connect the southern Italian port of Gioia Tauro with Verona in the north. Operated by MEDLOG, the logistics division of MSC, the initiative aims to streamline the inland movement of refrigerated containers and improve cold chain efficiency for perishable goods such as fruits and vegetables.© MEDWAY

The rail connection is expected to shorten transit times and reduce reliance on transhipments, providing a faster, more direct inland route to key European distribution hubs. The journey between Gioia Tauro and Verona takes approximately 24 hours.

The Italian agri-food sector, which handled around 340,000 refrigerated containers in 2024, stands to benefit significantly from the new route. In addition to supporting agricultural exports, the service may help alleviate road congestion and increase predictability in cargo movement.

By transferring freight from road to rail, the service aligns with broader efforts to reduce carbon emissions in logistics. This transition supports EU recommendations for more sustainable freight transport and contributes to the ongoing development of intermodal infrastructure within Italy.

The rail service is managed end-to-end by MEDLOG and MSC, aiming to ensure consistent oversight and operational coordination across the supply chain.
