Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced General Manager to oversee the daily operations and develop and implement our strategic plan for our wholesale plug plant nursery at Bordon Hill Nurseries and associated nurseries,

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in horticulture with excellent leadership skills.

The GM will be responsible for managing all aspects of the nursery's operations, ensuring quality and driving efficiency in everything we do.

Bordon Hill is part of the Ball Horticultural Group of companies and is the UK largest plant propagator for ornamental plug plants, specialising in seed raised annual and perennial production. Bordon Hill also acts as Ball UK’s main Distribution Centre to service their customers throughout the UK.

The facility is currently undergoing a major upgrade with plans in place to increase capacity in Distribution and Growing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership: Lead and develop the Management team in Growing, Production Operations, Quality and Facilities Maintenance.
  • Management: Assign tasks monitoring performance and foster a positive work environment.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement changes to enhance efficiency, quality, and profitability.
  • Budget Management: Assist in the preparation and management of the nursery budget, monitoring costs, and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
  • Reporting: Prepare and present regular reports on nursery operations, including productivity, quality, and financial performance.
  • Health and Safety: Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and promoting a safe working environment.

Desired Experience and Skills

  • Experience: Proven experience in nursery management (preferably plug production) or a similar role, with a strong background in horticulture.
  • Leadership Skills: Proven leadership and team management skills with the ability to motivate and develop staff.
  • Technical Skills: Knowledge of plant care, production techniques, and pest management.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with staff, customers, and suppliers.
  • Organisational Skills: Strong organisational and multitasking abilities, with the capacity to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Adaptability: Ability to adapt to changing conditions and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Sustainability: Knowledge of sustainable and environmentally friendly horticultural practices.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Agriculture, Business Management, or a related field is preferred.
