India: Khasi mandarin oranges in world’s first food atlas

The juicy Khasi Mandarin orange variety, called ‘the pride of Meghalaya’ has made it to the world’s first food atlas. The variety from the hill state of Meghalaya is among the 175 food items from India that are included in the world’s first food atlas.

The very concept of the atlas is to promote local culture and local and indigenous food items as well as to provide a sneak peek for travelers, tourists and food lovers, focusing on local ingredients and traditional dishes from all around the world.

The atlas contains almost 10,000 ethnic dishes, indigenous drinks, rare and interesting ingredients and food products from around the world. Popular food from India that have made it to the list include Vada Pav, Idli, Chole Bhature, Hyderabadi Biryani, Pav Bhaji, Kachodi, Kheer, Pani Puri, Gulab Jamun, Masala Dosa and Butter Chicken, among several other favourite snacks and food items, according to nenow.in.

The Khasi Mandarin is the only item food item from the north-eastern states to have made it to the select list. However, none of the restaurants in Meghalaya serving authentic food have made it to the recommendation list. Altogether, 367 authentic restaurants from across the country have been included.

The complete list of food and restaurant selection can be accessed at www.tasteatlas.com.
