For the fourth consecutive month, imported banana shipments were greater than those coming from the Canary Islands. The total available supply reportedly stood at around 47,020 tons, beating all records for August. The market share of imported bananas oscillated between 48% and 64% of the available supply in the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands.
In August 2018, 24,667 tons were shipped from the Canary Islands, while imports, mainly from Africa and Latin America, amounted to 30,107 tons. Since re-exports stood at 7,753 tons, Spanish consumers had access to some 47,020 tons of bananas. With these figures, the market share of imported bananas in August has ranged from a minimum of 48% to a maximum of 64% of the supply available in Spain.
The main suppliers of imported bananas in August were Costa Rica, with 8,415 tons; Ivory Coast, with 5,590; Colombia, with 4,589 tons and Cameroon, with 3,898 tons. Together, these four countries accounted for 75% of the total volume.
So far in 2018, shipments from the Canary Islands have reached 243,981 tons, those of imported bananas stand at 237,270 tons and re-exports amount to 71,314 tons, so the total available supply has reached 409,937 tons, 23,844 more than in the same period of 2017. The accumulated market share of imported bananas has ranged from a minimum of 40% to a maximum of 58%.
The main suppliers of imported bananas so far this year have been Costa Rica, with 80,089 tons; Ivory Coast, with 42,800 tons; Colombia, with 30,708 tons and France, with 25,441 tons. These countries account for 75% of the total volume.
