Local farmers are looking for profitable alternatives

Sicilians grow tropical fruit as a result of climate change

Climate change is causing higher temperatures in Sicily and farmers on the Italian island are looking for alternatives that they can grow safely and with high yields. Their solution: tropical fruits.

Sicilian-grown mangoes

New chapter in history
Since 2001, mangoes and avocados have been growing in a vineyard on the slopes of Mount Etna. They are grown here by Andrea Passanisi on land belonging to his family's winery. He was only 17 years old at the time. 'A madman', that's what his neighbors called him. They were used to the sight of olives and oranges. Everything else, in their opinion, had no place there. "But I wanted to write a new chapter in Sicilian history," says Passanisi. "It should tell of adaptation and a vision for the future."
