France: Lemon production surpluses and low prices

At the moment, there are a lot of lemons from Spain, and the demand is quite stable since the beginning of the season. The most beautiful lemons are sold around 1 euro/kilo [0.51 USD/lb], while the more standard quality is sold at about 0.70 euro/kilo [0.36 USD/lb]. According to a wholesaler from the Rungis market, “it is the production surplus that made the prices drop. This surplus was induced by the weather conditions, but also because the Spanish planted a lot more lemon trees two to three years ago. The trees are now starting to give fruits, so the volumes on the market are increasing. There are also many more players on the market, thus much more competition.”

The wholesaler from Rungis declares that the situation for this season is the same as last year. “Now, and for a long time still, lemons are not going to be worth much.” Two to three years ago, the situation was completely reversed. “Volumes were insufficient, due to bad weather conditions where hailstorms had destroyed a majority of the harvest, so prices were high.”
