The soft fruit season has started slightly early in Poland due to the hot weather, but the demand has increased with the early start. With a large number of apples being damaged, Polish soft fruit could get a bit more attention this year. For now, the prices of Polish soft fruit are quite unstable.
The Polish soft fruit season officially kicked off on July 1st, so the season has only just begun. After a slow start demand is already increasing, says Emilia Lewandowska, sales manager for Fruit-Group. “We‘ve just begun the season of soft fruit. We noticed increased interest if we compare the orders we’re receiving today from the ones we received around the end of June. The fact is that at the end of June soft fruit was harder to find as it was the very beginning of the blueberries season.”
The weather has been the talk of the country in Poland for the past few weeks. While a large number of apples were damaged, Lewandowska is happy to say it did not affect their soft fruit as much. “We cultivate blueberries, black and red currant, gooseberries, raspberries and sweet- and sour cherries. When looking at the frost that happened a while back, luckily hardly any of the produce was affected. There are a couple of exceptions, where plantations were partly destroyed, but the frost was much more gentle to the soft fruit than it was towards our apples. Looking forward, I expect rain will be a problem, as it will be rainy in Poland this week. We’ll have to wait and see what happens.”
Up until now, the soft fruit of Fruit-Group was not exported, but this should change soon: “We’ve been selling our soft fruit on the Polish market so far, but this week we will send our first order to Northern Europe. We’re not looking to expand this markets at a rapid pace, as we’d like to become stable producers and exporters of soft fruit first. It’s more important for us to insist on quality than to focus on shipping as many volumes as possible.” Lewandowska says. “In terms of prices it depends on the packaging that clients order, but I can say that the last two weeks were totally unstable. We hope the prices will stabilize a bit this week.”
