This was not an easy summer for avocados. Drought has been a problem for growers in many ways, says one importer from southern Germany: "The extreme drought and water scarcity in Chile had an impact on the harvest, and growers were not prepared for these weather conditions and did not have the opportunity to irrigate." The climate also led to a delay in the formation of dry matter. Kenya also suffered from a dry winter, that made it lag behind schedule as well.
The German market for avocados is currently rather quiet: "There is enough produce from Peru, some from Africa and the shipments from Chile are also getting started." The prices are still relatively high - depending on the country of origin. "The summer holidays, the heat and the large selection of traditional summer fruits have a negative impact on the demand for the exotics," the expert concludes.
