Price of Hainan mangoes shows end-of-season rise

The Chinese mango market has witnessed a great number of fluctuations since the mangoes entered the domestic market in January. The retail season of Hainan mangoes will come to an end in June. Manager Yu Yanhuang of Sanya Fresh Fruit Jiayuan Agriculture Co., Ltd. recently talked about the conditions in the mango market during this season.

"Looking back on this season, the market conditions were not great in the end. Many farmers suffered financial losses. There are three main reasons for this development. First, the production volume of Hainan mangoes continuously expanded in the last two years. That also means that the market supply volume continued to grow.

"Second, buyers did not purchase as much fruit as in previous years because of the outbreak of Covid-19 had an impact on the economic environment in China and abroad. Our wholesale partners previously purchased around 15 thousand kg of mangoes per day, while this year they only purchased around 10 thousand kg of mangoes per day. Apart from this, the weather has been extremely warm since the mango season began in October last year. The weather was warm and dry. The mangoes ripened too quickly and farmers were unable to harvest them on time. Some of the fruit ripened too early and spoiled as a result," explained manager Yu. "The price of domestic mangoes began to drop in late April. Only in the last weeks of the retail season did the price rise again. The average purchase price of Hainan mangoes in production areas was around 0.5 yuan [0.07 USD] per 0.5 kg lower than around the same time last year."

"The growing import of Southeast Asian mangoes also impacts the market position of domestic mangoes. Although the flavor of imported mangoes is generally not as good as the flavor of Hainan mangoes, their supply volume is large, their price low, and their market position strong," said manager Yu. "For example, when the import volume of Vietnamese mangoes declined in March and April, as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, the price of Hainan mangoes was relatively high. However, when the Sino-Vietnamese borders opened up again, the price of domestic mangoes dropped."

"Sanya Fresh Fruit sells fruit under their own brands "Yujia" and "Fresh Fruit Jiayuan". The company owns mango plantations in Hainan with a combined surface area of 47 hectares. The main mango varieties in their plantations include Jinhuang mangoes, Guifei mangoes, and Tai mangoes.
