It is currently busier in air freight than it has been in the previous months. René Baan, commercial manager at APC Handling, indicates that they are busy again at the storage and transshipment company specialising in the handling of air freight for vegetables, fruit, flowers and fish. "Across the board, the market is picking up again, although there are still major differences between the continents."
"There is a bit more flown in Europe," says René. “During the lockdown, cargo flights were fortunately possible and now we see the number of holiday flights increase again, which automatically means more space for perishables. Freight prices have fallen a bit in recent months, but not dramatically. That's not going to happen anytime soon, I expect, because no matter how you turn or reverse it, the airlines have missed out on a lot of turnover in recent times. ”
Still significant difference per continent
Despite this, René has no complaints about how things are going now. “There are more and more flowers and plant cuttings on the plane and many herbs and exotics are passing through. The import asparagus season is starting again and will increase in the coming weeks. Summer is, incidentally, a quieter period for air freight, because this is when we have many products in the European season. Nevertheless, we still see major differences per continent. For example, Europe, Africa and Israel are continuing well, but we still have many restrictions in Asia and North and South America. There is asparagus coming from Peru again, but not as much as in previous years. ”
The APC warehouse has recently been BRC approved
BRC
In the meantime, IPHandlers has further strengthened its position by obtaining the BRC storage and distribution certificate this week for the warehouse of APC Handling. The BRC standard describes the hygiene and food safety requirements within the food chain. "APC Handling thus demonstrates that it treats the treated air freight with an eye for food safety and with great accuracy." It previously had an AEO and SKAL certificate and was an approved inspection location for KCB and NVWA.
