90% of the fruit sent to South Korea was produced in the Department of Magdalena

Colombia is one of the Top 3 banana exporters to South Korea

This year, Colombia ranked third among the countries that export bananas to South Korea. Colombia, which was only surpassed by the Philippines and Ecuador, exported more than 7 million kilos of bananas to this destination, according to data revealed by Procolombia.

90% of these exports were made by Banasan, a marketer that is part of the Association of Banana Growers of Magdalena, La Guajira, and Cesar (Asbama). According to their figures, in 2020 they have exported nearly 500 containers, which is equivalent to 500,000 boxes of banana.

Jose Francisco Zuñiga, the executive president of Asbama, made a call to continue working as a team. “These results show that the banana sector is one of the main sources of income for the region and Colombia. Despite the circumstances that we are facing at a global level, we have worked as a team to continue doing our jobs,” he stated.

The executive president of CI Banasan SA, Edgar Chalhoub, stated: “We have positioned ourselves in the South Korean market thanks to the effort made by everybody in the production chain. We have achieved to get this far thanks to the perseverance and commitment of all who have trusted in the quality of the region's bananas.”

Asbama, in coordinated work with Procolombia, highlighted that the tariff preferences of the trade agreement between South Korea and Colombia increased their competitiveness and gave way to an increase in consumption. They have also been holding workgroups to define strategies to strengthen the positioning of Colombian bananas, which stands out for its quality in this demanding market.
