The situation in the Brazilian ginger market is relatively difficult at the moment: "Two weeks ago, prices were very high, reaching 42-43 Euro per package. Currently, sales are carried out at 35 Euro per package. In a very short time, we have seen a reduction of 7-8 Euro per package; a huge difference," says François Moran, of the company Tropibana.

This situation is linked to two factors: "There has been a huge increase in the supply, while the demand is not especially at the expected level. Ginger, much in demand during the lockdown because of its properties, is not currently selling as well as we would have liked. The curfew has not helped; people are afraid and fear the next decisions of the French government, which will probably take a toll on trade."
Before the Brazilian, Tropibana was also supplying Chinese ginger. "The advantage of the ginger from Brazil is that it is rounder, juicier and with less fiber and dryness than the Chinese. Also, it is visually more attractive."
At Rungis, things are currently very calm: "Last week, the market was almost empty from Monday to Wednesday; then we had activity from Thursday to Saturday. The start of this week is again particularly calm."
