The Minister Counselor of the Peruvian Embassy in Austria, Marcela Andia, stated that Austria was a potential market for Peruvian ginger. Andia stated this in the virtual forum 'Profile of the ginger market in Austria', organized by the Association of Exporters (ADEX), the Academic Centers of ADEX (Ceadex) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Andia stressed that Austria was a strong country within the European Union. She also said that, despite the pandemic, the country's economy was expected to grow by 1.4% in 2021 pulled by foreign trade, the driving force behind its economy. "Taking into consideration this strength and that the country imported 1.7 million dollars of Peruvian ginger in 2020, we must take advantage of increasing shipments to Austria," she stressed.
Austrian consumers are increasingly more attentive and concerned about cultivation and production procedures, therefore sustainability and certification are highly valued in that destination, she added. In addition, Peruvian ginger exports are favored by a preferential 0% tariff as a result of the signing of the Multiparty Trade Agreement with the European Union, Andia stressed.
Prices
The price of Peruvian, Chinese, or Brazilian organic ginger in the Austrian market can range between 15.2 and 15.7 euro per kilo (16 to 18 dollars). Meanwhile, the kilo of conventional ginger costs 5.70 to 14.28 euro (6.7 to 16.9 dollars).
“There is an unexplored niche: its use as industrial input. We have already identified a varied portfolio of products based on ginger. The industry is increasingly making use of this food and it is creating a new offer taking into account new trends," Andia added. "Ginger is widely used as a condiment in gastronomy due to its very particular spicy aroma and flavor, but it is also very popular as a natural medicine with multiple healing properties, it is even used in the cosmetic industry," she concluded.
The event, which was held online, is part of the Specialization Program in Business Intelligence and International Market Analysis to provide qualitative and quantitative tools to prominent diplomatic officials abroad.
