The new Chinese garlic harvest should reach the Netherlands within five to six weeks. "There’s not much garlic available now, and the price is good. Prices vary between €25 and €28,” says Gerry Li, sales manager at Vision International. This Dutch company can justifiably be called a ginger specialist too.
"We import ginger from almost all the important production countries. Those include China, Brazil, Peru, and Thailand. We have year-round Chinese and Peruvian ginger available. The new harvest will arrive at the end of May, beginning of June."
"Peru has a good harvest with a lot of organic ginger. Prices are reasonably stable this season. However, this might rally slightly in the coming weeks. That’s partly due to the expensive sea freight. We also get a weekly supply of ginger from Brazil. This isn’t so strong, and there are few containers available. So we fly a lot of ginger in too."
Vision Fresh currently supplements its exports with eddoes and cassava. "These aren’t immediately popular products, but demand is rising. The further opening of the hospitality sector can play an important role in this," concludes Gerry.
