Grupo IFA’s achieves turnover in excess of 32,000 million euros in the South of Europe

The General Shareholders Meeting of Grupo IFA has produced the financial results for 2020. The company has achieved a consolidated turnover of €32.2bn and a year-on-year growth of 21.8% thanks to the Spanish, Portuguese and Italian markets, out of which €15bn correspond to consolidated sales in Spain. This represents some 11% growth, thus doubling the average growth over the last five years. In addition, regarding employment levels, our affiliate companies have created 7,046 new jobs in the year 2020 and provide employment to 137,764 people. This growth reveals that our business model based on proximity remains robust, and that it has emerged strengthened from an exceptional year marked by mobility restrictions, especially during the first months of the pandemic.

In the year 2020, IFA continues to strengthen its position as an operator in the South of Europe. Grupo IFA national associates, together with our Portuguese partner, Sonae MC and the alliance with the Italian Gruppo VéGé – which is part of the International Procurement Committee – comprises a total retail surface area of 6.9 million square meters over 11,175 stores throughout Spain, Italy and Portugal. This accounts for a 13.8% market share by surface area across the three markets, according to Nielsen.

On a national level, the Group closes 2020 providing coverage to 82% of the Spanish population thanks to a network of 6,335 stores over a retail surface area of 3.9 million square meters, which accounts for a market share by surface area of 19.5% and 31.1% in the retail and wholesale channels respectively. The company is the leading retail distribution group by surface area in 17 provinces, including Madrid and Barcelona, according to Retail Data. Furthermore, the whole of the affiliate members provide employment to over 87,742 people in Spain. This involves a year-on-year growth of 5.2% and 4,525 new employments.

Grupo IFA’s business model was created around fresh produce, proximity and a wide product range supported by manufacturers and innovation. In this respect, IFA‘s market share by manufacturer brand has increased 3.8 percentage points over the last eight years, thus achieving a 23.9% market share in the supermarket channel.

At the General Shareholders Meeting, Grupo IFA’s Managing Director, Juan Morales, has stressed that “after all the events that have taken place this year and the impact it all has had on all of us, it does not seem appropriate to talk about results. That is why I wish to emphasise the courage and the firm dedication of all the companies and employees that form part of our Group across all regions. We take pride to belong to IFA, and to a whole sector that despite not being fully recognised at times, has given its best in the moments of truth.”
