Fruitgrowing Quality is organizing the second Open Day at Quinta Dos Reis

Last week, Quinta Dos Reis, located in Anadia (Portugal), held an Open Day to showcase the evolution of the Red KIBI Rossy, Gold KIBI Sunxy 01, and Gold KIBI Sunxy 02 protected kiwi varieties to producers in the Iberian Peninsula. This meeting between producers, experts in the sector, and the director of the company, Joaquin Rey, has made it possible to publicize new techniques used for cultivation, their evolution after two years of grafting, as well as the facilities, technical management, and future ways of working.

"The goal was to share experiences with the different associated producers and interested producers that are distributed throughout the peninsula in order to share knowledge that allows improving the quality of the plantations as well as the mistakes to avoid in the next campaign," stated Mauro Rey, responsible of Business Development.

Businessmen, farmers, and technicians with plantations of these varieties in different communities, such as Asturias, Galicia, Andalusia, Extremadura, and Portugal, got together on August 11. The agronomists of the company and the people responsible for the farm's production also assisted to the Open Day, sharing information on the evolution of the varieties in different climates and soils.

At Quinta dos Reis, different colors of windproof mesh are analyzed (glass, gray, yellow, red), length of loaders, number of fruits per shoot, pruning, fruit thinning, etc., in order to improve competitiveness and profitability in organic and conventional cultivation. The aim is to improve the quality of the production, yielding fruit of commercial size with an average of 100 to 120 grams in the Red KIBI Rossy and 140 to 160 grams in the Gold KIBI Sunxy. The average weight, at sixty days of harvest, is 76 grams in Red KIBI Rossy and a maximum of 176 in Gold Sunxy 02.

The objective of the FruitGrowing Quality Group is to increase production in both the northern and southern hemispheres, developing the varieties of the OKiwi Consortium in Spain, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, Argentina, Uruguay, and soon in Chile. Thus, it is possible to ensure the quantity and quality in the destination markets, investing from the in vitro plant, growing them in coconut fiber to avoid root stress and spirulation and grafting of the chip variety in the nursery itself. To achieve this, the company has established a joint venture with Viveros Diego Díaz, improving the quality of the plant and avoiding grafting failures in the field.

FruitGrowing Quality will be present at Fruit Attraction Hall 5, to share experiences, show the quality of the plants and the project's growth to all those producers interested in participating in the development and planting of the colored kiwi varieties that they market.
