The peach crop in Porto Alegre is currently in the harvest stage; it is forecast to extend until early January. Well-known for the production of table peaches, the state capital of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul has 20 hectares cultivated with the stone fruit and 20 families dedicated to the production, which reaches over 135 tons.
According to the head of the Emater/RS-Ascar office in Porto Alegre, Luís Paulo Vieira Ramos, this may be the best harvest in the last four years, as the quality and quantity are very good. Productivity is good, reaching around eight tons per hectare. The peach varieties cultivated are Premier, Sulina, Charme, Peach, Chimarrita, Douradão, Maciel, Granada, Cardinal and Eldorado. The harvest is sold directly to the consumer, through points of sale in Largo Glênio Peres (Center) and also in Vila Nova, Campo Novo, at Coronel Marcos and Vicente Montegia.
In addition to peaches, those who visit these traditional offerings in Vila Nova, Ipanema, Restinga and other neighborhoods can also purchase plums and flowers grown by producers in the capital.
