Ahold Delhaize reported: "By sharing best practices across all of Ahold Delhaize brands, we can support each other to keep ahead of the competition. UK retailers raise shop prices for first time since 2019
British retailers increased their prices for the 1st time in more than 2 years in November as the coronavirus pandemic hit global supply chains, limited staff availability and pushed up inflation for shoppers, a survey showed. With the Bank of England due to consider this month a 1st interest rate hike since the COVID-19 crisis broke, the British Retail Consortium said shop prices rose by 0.3% compared with November 2020, the 1st annual increase since May 2019.

Coop Netherlands members approve merger with Plus
Coop Nederland UA (Coop) has announced that its members have approved the proposed merger with Plus by an overwhelming majority. The approval of the Plus General Assembly, which took place at the same time, is an important step towards the completion of the merger, Coop added. The deal, expected to close in early 2022, is subject to approval by the Netherlands Authority for Consumers & Markets (ACM).

UK: Sainsbury’s opens 1st supermarket in Ludlow
Sainsbury’s has opened its 1st ever supermarket in the Shropshire town of Ludlow. Spanning 19,564 square feet, the store was opened by Deputy Mayor of Ludlow Vivienne Parry and Ludford Parish Council Chair Imogen Liddle, alongside local Ludlow Primary School pupil Lottie Wells who won a competition to design a limited-edition Sainsbury’s bag for life for the opening.

Tesco acquires supermarket chain in Ireland
Tesco Ireland has announced the acquisition of 10 Joyce’s Supermarkets stores based in Galway. The stores currently operate under the Joyce family’s independent brand. Subject to approval by local competition authorities, they will be rebranded as Tesco stores throughout 2022, with existing staff being invited to remain with the business.

Waitrose enters independent channel with Margiotta partnership
Waitrose products will appear in independent convenience stores for the 1st time as part of a partnership with Edinburgh and East Lothian convenience store chain Margiotta. The partnership will see more than 600 Waitrose products become available in Margiotta’s 10 shops from 30 November.

US: FTC launches inquiry into grocery supply-chain disruptions
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has ordered 9 large grocery retailers, distributors and manufacturers to provide detailed information to help the agency address national supply-chain disruptions that have led to empty shelves and higher prices for consumers. In announcing the inquiry, the FTC said it’s sending special orders to Walmart, Amazon, The Kroger Co., C&S Wholesale Grocers, Associated Wholesale Grocers, McLane Co., Procter & Gamble Co., Tyson Foods and The Kraft Heinz Co.

US: Online grocer Farmstead to accept SNAP EBT transactions
E-grocer Farmstead has enlisted third-party processor Forage to enable electronic benefit transfer (EBT) payments from Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participants for online grocery purchases. Burlingame, California-based Farmstead said that the partnership will make it the nation’s 1st online-only grocer to directly accept SNAP EBT transactions. Plans call for the Forage payment processing technology into Farmstead’s e-commerce operations - including its Grocery OS online grocery platform - and begin to accepting SNAP EBT payments by the 2nd quarter of 2022.
