Discovering Cuba through its companies

Macfrut President Renzo Piraccini has recently presented the next edition (Rimini, May 4th-6th 2022) to Cuban exhibitors and companies. After the presentation, he has visited some companies also thanks to AICS and ICE.

Impresa agroindustrial Ceballos
"Impresa Ceballos is a state-owned company covering 11,000 hectares. It grows different crops and features various processing plants. The fruits grown include mangos, limes, papayas, guavas and avocados.

Tomato processing line

Vegetables include cabbages, eggplants, tomatoes and Habanero chili peppers. The industrial part includes plants to make fruit juice, jams and tomato pulp. Many independent growers work with this company as well, receiving technical means and selling back to it part or the whole of their production."

The group formed by Renzo Piraccini, ICE Havana director Simona Autuori, Roberto Giuliotto and Luigi Partenza from AICS Cuba and the managers of Agro industriale Ceballos

The pineapple processing line was supplied by Tropical Food Machinery - they produce natural juice, concentrate and pineapple rounds and dices in both jars and tins. Most of the production is placed in 1 ton aseptic bags, which are then used throughout the year.

Processing of Habanero chili peppers

"The director of the plant is Rodolfo Morales. The company also features 35 hectares of greenhouses where production goes on all year round and 55 hectares of open fields with drip irrigation. The main productions are tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers, Habanero chili peppers and melons."

Victoria de Giron
Victoria de Giron covers 62,000 hectares, it was established 55 years ago and used to be a leading orange producer. "Then production dropped due to phytosanitary issues and crops were reconverted to other sectors (livestock, cattle, chickens) yet maintaining 3500 hectares of guava, 2200 ha of mangos, 1000 hectares of avocados. Citrus fruit production was cut to 2200 hectares."

They have a large fruit juice processing plant which is now too large, as it used to process the product from over 45,000 hectares of oranges."

They recently started growing blueberries. They have 10 hectares, six of which are productive. At the moment, they import micro-propagated plants from Chile, which they then grow in a local vineyard. "They are working on this project together with a Chilean partner who supplied the varieties, packaging and know-how."

Blueberry cultivation. Production starts in early December and ends in mid-March

Just like many other places, they use a bloom inducer called cytokinin, which enables a better ripening uniformity. They regulate the pH and electric conductivity through fertigation.
