UK: Tesco lowers profit sights as British shoppers face squeeze
Tesco, Britain's biggest retailer, forecast full-year profit at the lower end of its previous guidance, blaming uncertainty over how a worsening cost-of-living crisis would affect consumer spending. Tesco, which has a 27% share of Britain's grocery market, said customers were continuing to change their shopping habits to save money and reduce waste. Tesco said it now expected retail adjusted operating profit in its 2022-2023 financial year of 2.4-2.5bln pounds ($2.7-$2.9bln).

Discount supermarket Lidl GB to hire 1,000 staff in Britain over five months
German-owned discount supermarket Lidl GB said it would hire 1,000 hourly paid staff in Britain over the next five months for its new stores and warehouses. The new recruits will earn a minimum of 10.90 pounds ($12.43) an hour outside of London and 11.95 pounds inside the M25 motorway.

France: Système U joins buying group Epic Partners
Système U needed economies of scale after the termination of its buying alliance Envergure with Carrefour. The French retailer, a cooperative with no international operations, wants to be in a stronger position to negotiate with the big FMCG multinationals. That is why it is now joining forces with German market leader Edeka, which set up European purchasing powerhouse Epic Partners in 2021. So reports French magazine LSA based on an internal memo from chairman Dominique Schelcher. According to German trade magazine Lebensmittel Zeitung, Système U would join via Everest, the buying combination between Edeka and Dutch online supermarket Picnic.

The Veggie Van - actually a veggie trailer - hit the road in Niagara County in 2015 when the Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) received the five-year grant “Creating Healthy Schools and Communities” from the New York State Department of Health. “We thought, hey, why don’t we take the fruits or veggies that are grown here in the county and take them right to places”, said Jen Regan, program manager for the Veggie Van. “Instead of having people come to a central location”. In 2021, the Veggie Van provided more than 10,000 pounds of fresh produce to Niagara County communities.
